Hay supplied to Hay Australia is graded through a comprehensive, objective and repeatable process.
The process begins with bales of hay being cored on a proportionate basis, in order to gain a representative sample of the product supplied.
All hay has an objective analysis of its quality through testing with the AgriFood Technologies Feed Test laboratories.
This test measures important characteristics such as Digestible Dry Matter (DDM), Neutral Detergent Fibre (NDF), Acid Detergent Fibre (ADF), Water Soluble Carbohydrates (WSC) and Protein.
A visual inspection of the hay is then conducted which, when combined with the feed test, will determine the grade of the hay.
Colour, stem thickness, brown leaf, black spot, weathering damage and contamination are all key aspects of the visual inspection process.
